I want to share a podcast I sent to both of my children. That equates to a 5 star rating! I listened to it while on the treadmill. I found my self nodding my head and voicing my agreement outloud to no one in paticular. It really is a podcast I think would be benefical to almost everyone.
Mel Robbins discusses the "Let Them Theory" and it hit me on many levels, as a mother, wife, friend, daushter and sister. My need to jump in help currate our children's lives is a real struggle for me. Mel did a great job to help me see that my need to step in has more to do with me than with them. She also did a great job laying out the benfits and importance of stepping back even when we are not fulling in alignment with their path. Letting them make their own choices and mistakes is an important of learning and development. She went on to demonstrate how the theory works in all area of my life. How often do we get irrated with someone for their choices and waste countless hours and energy trying to get them to see things our way or just simply making a case in our head over and over again. For me, I know I have spent way too much of precious time rumminating on how someone has hurt ome or made a choice that I didn't agree with. I am not typically the kind of person to point these slights or disagreements out to the individual. I have secretly longed to be one of those people that could. After listening to this I no longer harbour that wish and am working to rid my brain space of the desire to tell anyone how they should live their life. Hey if you ask me for help or my opinion I am there and happy to share. I will not insert myself unless invited, and then I will not be invested in your choice of path. I will only be invested in celebrating your happiness and success, or a support as your re-group after a mis-step.
Without hesitation I can say this podcast changed my approach to daily interactions in a positive way. I am not always successful at following the Let Them theory, but I am certainly trying and will continue to try.
